My money healing journey
Have you ever thought about what is your money story? If not, now is the time. For me I gained a better understanding of my story when I went into therapy. It was in this space where I gained language for the experiences I had as a child and in my young adult life. I had no idea how much of my story impacted my relationship with self, others and even money.
So what is my money story?
I grew up in a single parent latina home and money was not talked about. I was very curious about money and how life worked, but my curiosity wasn't fostered. By the time I turned 18, I became financially independant and was on my own to figuring out how to live this adult life. I didn't know how to budget, let alone I had never heard of "investing" or "retirement." But I did hear words "save," growing up.
In fact when I got my first job at 14, I saved every cent I earned...you know a whole $7 per hour. I was praised for my saving habits, but really I saved it all because I was afraid to spend it, fear had consumed me. This habit turned into scarcity...a money mindset I struggle with till this day. I have done years of healing work, so I'm grateful for the tools and strategies I've learned, but I would be lying if I said I was fully healed and no longer struggle with scarcity. Instead I contront it with truth every time a thought like: "You'll never have enough," or "You are meant to financially struggle," comes to mind.
These habits and challenges followed me into my young adult life as a young mom and wife. I made a bunch of poor financial decisions and before I knew it lost my home, my car and all of possessions during the great recession (in 2010). Experiencing bankruptcy was one of the most embarrassing and shame filled seasons of my life....But I believe my bankruptcy was an invitation by God to reimagine and redefine what success meant to me.
Now 15 years later, I'm on the other side of my bankruptcy. This part of my story is one I'm no longer embarrassed about, and believe it's what has shaped and inspired me to do the work I do now as a financial educator, and a personal finance creator content who talks about money through a shame-free lens.
