Let's talk about mental well-being and how it impacted my finances.
How it all began....
In 2017 I was struggling with my mental health. I was spiraling and had no language to fully explain what I was feeling. The way I described it then was that there was some sort of disconnect between my brain and my money. I felt like a failure. You see after we lost our home in 2010, I did everything I could to learn how to budget and save. I became a budget master and yet I was still struggling to survive. I learned that this time around it wasn't an overspending issue for us. In fact we were underemployed and underpaid. This whole time I thought it was that I was doing something wrong or not trying hard enough.
Soon after, through therapy and my financial coach I learned that I was struggling with limiting beliefs about myself which was deeply impacting my relationships with others and even money. I needed to unpack my story and gain language around the hard parts of my childhood and the financial trauma I had experienced in my young 20's. I did the hard intentional work to dig deep, learn how to reconnect with self, uncover the limiting beliefs and lies I believed about myself. As well as, how to reframe my thought patterns. I grieved, I held space, and I meditated on God's word to help me get through.
I held on to truths like:
"I am chosen, wanted and accepted."
"I belong."
"I can thrive and succeed."
"God gives me the ability to build wealth."
"I have unlimited access to God's resources."
Along with some other tools and strategies like journaling, scripture, body movement, meditation, getting into community and so much more. These tools and continuing my healing journey is what put me down the path of finding true joy and abundance where my identity wasn't tied to how much money I have.
